Last year I got to photograph along side the amazing Katie, from Katie Goff Photography. She's an old school friend who moved down to Cornwall for University and never came back to the Midlands - I don't blame her, it's such a beautiful part of the UK. She had a wedding booked in for back home, at the most amazing venue and asked if I'd like to work along side her so I jumped at the chance!

Meet Hannah and Ady.

My day started off by photographing the guys getting ready at their home in a small village on the outskirts of Melbourne in Derbyshire. This was the first time that I had photographed the Groomsmen prep, with their being two photographers it was an ideal scenario to a take a trip to their home. It was the opposite of photographing the Bridal prep. The only bit that the boys had to do together were put on their ties and buttonholes, but they still managed to run behind schedule, so their trip to pub on the way to Melbourne Church was out of the question.

Hannah is the nanny of the beautiful family that live at the Staunton Harold Estate in Derbyshire and as it plays such a big part in her life, what better way to celebrate with their family and friends than to hold their reception there?

The love between the beautiful bride and her new husband was visible from the get go.

The exterior of Staunton Harold and the grounds are mind blowing, but when you see inside WOW! I was lucky enough to get to visit the house before the day of the wedding and got a full tour. The interior design is stunning, my favourite was the Library, it was the most creative looking room, very traditional with the walls lined with books and it was huge! Unfortunately for us, the caters had that room for serving up food, so was unable to photograph in their. Just look at the stunning dining area though with the silver candelabras.

Hannah and Adys colour theme was classic. Going for a winter based, ivy green and cream, seen in their decorations, bridal party clothing and the beautiful bouquet of flowers. The colours work so well together, what will be your colour theme?

It really was lovely to work along side such a good friend and with such a wonderful couple.

Music is all down to personal taste, for a wedding it needs to be a joint choice. It's should be something that is personal to you and your new husband, so why do we always hear the same songs?

As a photographer, I've heard so many different songs played at key moments during the day. The ones that stand out to me most are the quirky, unusual, unheard songs.

Artists tend to write songs with an audience in mind, the money makers are songs that are played at weddings. How often do you see a first dance video floating around Facebook, featuring a popular romantic song? But does that song have a deep, personal, connection to you? With that in mind I asked a group of people what songs they are fed up of hearing at weddings. What songs are always played, taking away that unique feel to their friends/clients big day?

Can you guess who was at the top?

As much as everyone loves his songs, Ed Sheeran topped the list! We all love a bit of Ed, don't get me wrong but it's because of that reason alone, we think it's becoming a less personal choice. Everyone is having him for their first dance! Christina Perri with "A Thousand Years" is another one of those songs and don't get me started on Bruno Mars "Marry You"! They're everywhere!

Other songs that hit the list were: Black Eyed Peas "I Got a Feelin'", The Macarena and ChaChaSlide!

I also asked them what songs they love to hear and what they had playing on their own wedding day? Want to know?

Topping my list as one of the best choices of songs for a wedding came from a past bride (that had the most laid back approach to her day). On exiting their ceremony the Bride and Groom walked out hand in hand to "Song 2" by Blur! Later on that evening, they were dragged in to the spotlight as their friend sang an amazing rendition of "Sweet Child O' Mine", for their first dance as husband and wife.

A bride-to-be shared her plans for her first dance song, an artist that I've never heard of but on searching for him, I fell in love. Luke Bryan - "Play it Again", it just sounds so perfect, it's romantic but not overplayed like most.

"Mardy Bum" - Arctic Monkeys made an appearance as a first dance song and the classic "Canon in D" - Pachelbel made an appearance during someones big day, but on the steel drums. My most recent couple walked in to the Romantic Flight of "How to Train your Dragon" - go take a listen to that! Its not what you'd expect a film to have and it works so well as a wedding song!

If you have a song in mind but it's too "out there" and you'd like to make it more wedding appropriate, check out Vitamin String Quartet - what they do is just perfect.

What songs get you up and dancing at a wedding? What can't you stand? Let me know in the comments section.

I asked past brides what tips and tricks they would give to future brides and what they wish they had told their past selves.

#1 My favourite response out of all of them was this, something I want everyone to take on board after photographing so many weddings; "Do it for you and your Husband to be, not for others. They will understand and love the day even more for it!"

Very often people try and impress friends and family by going above and beyond for their big day, that they forget the day is for. It's about celebrating and uniting two people, forever. It's about you as husband and wife.

#2 Go Unplugged! Ban guests from using technology, at least during the ceremony.

You will be amazed with how many photographers have to work their magic, contorting their body, around guests with cameras/phones and even iPads during the ceremony. When the beautiful bride is being walked down the aisle with their proud father and a guest steps out in to the middle, with their iPhone and whacky phone cover, blocking the photographers view. They pay us as photographers to capture these moments, they invite guests to witness those moments.

#3 Schedule in "Us" time with your new husband.

Your day will go so fast, that you will blink and it will all be over. After your ceremony, take some time for you, as the new Mr and Mrs. At this point, you may even want to go for a walk with your photographer, they will keep their distance but it is the perfect to capture your raw emotions, as your husband whispers sweet nothings in to your ear.

#4 Make-up Artist and Hair Stylists are lifesavers!

Don't give yourself added stress by doing your own hair and makeup. Have a professional do it for you but make sure you have a trial with them and that it's still a style that is 'you'. Professional make-up is created to last, so is perfect for all day coverage on one of the most important days of your life. The same goes with creating those lasting curls or frizz-free up dos. I know I stress over doing my hair for a night out, so for something as important as your wedding, don't put yourself through it.

#5 Don't spend a fortune...

The wedding is for you as a couple, it's no longer seen as the norm for Father of the Bride to pay for everything. Can you afford to spend a crazy amount on a Wedding and still have all of the nice treats/trips away/holidays for the next couple of years? What would you rather? I can tell you that I have photographed weddings where the couple have spent a fortune and others that have been on a low budget and I cannot tell. Is your day worth living in eternal debt? Shop around, get quotes, be quirky. Most of all, if you do want to spend big, spend on things that mean the most. A dress worn once for £2-3k or around £1k on wedding photos that last a lifetime?

#6 Invite those that mean the most.

You don't need to invite your Dads Brothers Neighbour, Dave that you've met once when shopping in Tesco. For the day invite those you wouldn't want to miss out on the most important parts; the walking down the aisle, the exchanging of the vows, the speeches. You can invite everyone else to the reception, it doesn't mean you don't care about them, you just want to celebrate the most special moments with those closest to you.

and finally, there's always one...

#7 You get for less murder...

Good luck to all of the future Brides, do feel free to share your tips and tricks in the comments section!

I had the absolute pleasure of photographing Becky and Mikes day. We started in Loughborough then moved on to the small village of Quorn, in Leicestershire. I've known Becky for 10+ years, so was honoured when she asked me to be her photographer. I knew instantly that their day would be different and relaxed. I love not being part of the norm, I like things to be quirky. For now, I leave you with two beautiful bridal portraits whilst I work on the rest of their gallery.
